Tiny Houses and Small Houses

The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.

1920s Beach House Repurposed

July 16, 2014

New House On The Coast In Cornwall, UK

Cottage Exterior This place is aptly called The Beach Hut and is apparently available for rent. From what I understand, it has been used for a relaxing holiday by some very famous people. It’s so idealistic that it has captured the interest of people in film and photography.  From the pictures, I can see why anyone would love to spend time there.

The setting is absolutely gorgeous. It is set on a hillside within a valley, above a beautiful beach. It has views of the water, the mountains and fields.

It’s a small place that was beautifully renovated.  Two people can stay quite comfortably in it.

Open Concept CottageThey call the style “a combination of rough-luxe and shabby-chic”. I call it almost perfect.

I say that because there are a few things that I would have done differently however that is the beauty of building or renovating a place, you get to do it the way you want it. I love the floors and the open spaces. I especially love that there are a lot of windows which provide a view of the beautiful landscapes.

The cottage has all the luxuries you could want with the exception of a washing machine (I have found that I really miss being able to do laundry whenever I need to without having to go elsewhere to get it done).

Some of the amenities:

  • King size bed.
  • Microwave.
  • Oven.
  • Dishwasher.
  • Fridge.

If it wasn’t so remote, I would be very happy to live there. The size of house is perfect and the views are perfect. It’s definitely a perfect place to rent for a few days or weeks of relaxation.

And best of all, there is  a log burning stove that is set in a stone backdrop. That is one of my all-time favorite things about older houses – and something that I dream of incorporating into my next house.

Tiny Rio Rental House

July 13, 2014

Back DeckEvery once in awhile I come across a tiny rental house that catches my eye. This one seems to be really nicely done both inside and outside.

At 900 square feet, it’s not tiny but it does fall within the small footprint category. It was built using steel and stone; they boast that they used green friendly building methods. It is also located in an ecological area so everything would be as natural as ever and to be kept that way – that’s a good thing.

Tiny Rental House LivingroomThe location of the house is on the Taos de Fernando River,  Taos, New Mexico. It’s nestled in a beautiful forest area alongside a river.

What’s good about this place is that there is something to do for every season – including hiking trails anytime and skiing during the winter months. If you want a little less action packed type of day, it is within a short driving distance to restaurants, galleries and museums.

Kitchen The inside appears to be beautifully done which makes it just as comfortable inside and it is outside. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a very nicely appointed kitchen with what appears to be all the amenities you would need, and a super comfortable living room with fireplace (as far as I can tell it’s not a wood burning fireplace). The ceilings are 10 feet high, and there are lots of windows for lots of natural light.

Between the inside and the outside of the house, I’d say it’s a mixture of modern and aged. Whatever they were aiming for, they’ve done a nice job.

Spa TubOne of the biggest highlights would be the stone deck with a spa tub overlooking the river. That would be so relaxing and enjoyable after a day out and about.

This is the type of small rental house that I would love to spend some time in.

Monterey Bay Dome Cabin For Rent

April 24, 2014

Dome Cabin For RentThis tiny cabin that is available for rent is really too cute. It is situated near Monterey Bay, CA.

The layout is really well done for such a small place. Built in a dome shape, the roof is partial big window that looks out from the bedroom as well as the living room. It would be relaxing to lay in bed at night and see the stars on a clear night.

They have thought of everything. It is a one-bedroom (loft bedroom), kitchen, bathroom with shower, living room with futon, and a deck. Pets are allowed but there is no smoking.

The location is perfect – close to beach, forest type setting and close to a Nisene Marks State Park, not too far from Santa Cruz, and about 45 miles from Monterey.

Apparently this place is so popular that it books up quickly every year. I can see why. If I lived within driving distance, I’d be booking a few days.

You can see many more pictures and get much more information , including how-to book some time at the dome cabin.

If you enjoy this type of down-time, you may be interested in your very own tiny cabin. Many of the tiny houses that we show here are suitable for cottages and cabins too. Take a look at some of the designs that are not too expensive to build or have built. All you need is the perfect location.

It has an all-wood interior with many modern amenities.

Little Portland Retreat

January 9, 2014

Small Purple Vacation Home

Portland RetreatThis one is so unique and so sweet.

It’s not a tiny place but it is small. There is 440 square feet of ingenious design. It’s fun and functional at the same time.

The owners took a garage that was built in 1922 and made it into a cozy getaway that sleeps one to three people.

There is a full kitchen, bathroom, and a bedroom up the unique staircase.

They say it’s suitable for short-term or long-term stays.

We can’t write enough to do it justice so here are the pictures.

Reclaiming An Old Cabin

January 5, 2014

Reclaiming A Tiny Cabin For Vacation Rental

Tiny CabinBefore larger homes became the norm, almost everyone lived in a small place. This cabin is a perfect example of what homes were like at the beginning of the last century.

This beauty was built in 1917 and is 800 square feet of a cabin that has been left virtually untouched in almost 100 years. The people that bought it didn’t do much to it other than some restoration that was needed.

The house was build using redwood – just beautiful!

The doors and windows are original.

There is a gorgeous open fireplace for heating  – with forced air for backup. The fireplace is an old brick fireplace (which is one of my favorite things from older houses).

This along the lines of our plan when we decide where we want to settle again. We want to buy a very small, old fixer-upper and make it into our own but keeping as much of the old charm as possible. That house will become our retirement home.

In their case, they’ve made this tiny cabin into a gorgeous tiny cabin vacation rental in Inverness, California.

Vermont Winter Or Summer

December 26, 2013

Vermont Getaway

Vermont RentalVermont is one of our favorite states. It doesn’t matter what season it is, you’ll always find something to do there. Every season has it’s own beauty.

There are many rental properties in Vermont but since we like small, we like this place. Although it is not as small as we normally talk about, it is so well-done that we couldn’t resist sharing it with you.

This vacation rental is 850 square feet set on 10 acres in Green Mountains. it’s what they call a classic style cabin with modern amenities. From the pictures, it looks like they’ve got that right!

This place would be cozy winter and summer. And true to Vermont, there is something to do all year-round. Skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, swimming in the summer, and beauty galore during spring and fall.

It would be a perfect small place to live in – short term or long term.

Floating Guesthouse

A Guesthouse Floating On The Water

Floating GuesthouseI came across this small guesthouse that is on water – a floating house for guests and thought it would be a wonderful place for visitors to stay.

It’s unique.

Imagine how much of a fun experience it would be to spend the night on the water in a beautifully designed house — a .

Simple Architecture

They’ve kept the design really clean and simple. By keeping it simple, they are able to make the best of a small space.

Houseboat KitchenBut what you will see is that simple doesn’t necessarily mean that you would do without. This place has all the amenities that you need.

A nice open kitchen and dining area.

A spacious living area.

A nicely appointed bathroom, with a large shower.

An inviting loft bedroom.

And a wrap around deck so that you won’t miss out on any of the incredible sights that you can experience while living on the water.

I’ve always loved the idea of living in a floating house. This place has certainly renewed my interest, even if it would only be for a night or two.

Beachside Studio

A Tiny Studio By The Beach

Studio LivingroomHere is another great example of what you can do with a tiny space and make it useable. They converted an used basement area into a tiny for rent by the beach.

What a perfect idea whether you build it for yourself, for a guest house, or as a rental.

Who wouldn’t want a home on or near the beach?

Beach StudioThis is another great use of space.

What they’ve done is created a cozy vacation retreat. It has been done so nicely that it could even be used as a tiny home. It’s clean, uncluttered, and cozy all at the same time.

The best of both worlds – a tiny home and a beach!

Yosemite Tiny Cabin Rental

November 16, 2013

Simple Rustic Lifestyle

Yosemite Micro CabinToday I came across a cute little in California. It seems that tiny rentals are now starting to pop up all over the country.

It’s a one-bedroom modern, yet rustic cabin that is very close to the south entrance of Yosemite National Park.

It’s secluded and private but close enough to town for anything that you might need.

It’s powered by solar energy and heated with cozy fireplaces yet it has many of the comforts from home. Way to go – good to be environmentally-friendly!

It is actually one of three cabins that they rent on their property.

The cabin is nestled in a meadow of wild flowers and native trees.

It looks like it’s a beautiful, relaxing place to get away from it all for a few days.
