Life Changing Decisions
A few years ago, we made a decision to live our (my husband and me) life as well as we possibly could. We figure that life is too short (you know the expression) to waste any time doing things that you don’t like or that you don’t want to do.
At that time, we owned a big house with a big yard, I was working outside the home at a job that I didn’t like and that held no satisfaction for me, we had very little money left over once we were done paying all the bills, and even less time to spend with family doing the things that we enjoy.
We knew what we wanted to do when we retired, but that dream kept getting farther and farther away. Everything else seemed to be taking over.
So, we made the difficult and stressful decision to change our life.
I took an early retirement from my job, we sold our home and moved into a smaller rented house that was closer to friends and family. We got rid of a lot of the stuff that we had collected over the years – stuff that we weren’t using or didn’t need.
One year later, we realized that that those changes still weren’t enough. Although life was better, we still had a lot of bills to pay each month, we weren’t able to do all that we wanted, and still weren’t able to save for the retirement that we had always dreamed of.
This prompted another big decision – why not just go for the dream?
After much thought, we did it. We sold, donated, gave away all but a few precious possessions and moved into our RV. We became what is affectionately known as “a nomad”.
We both work from home, wherever home happens to be. Our bills are minimal and we’ve almost paid off all of the debt that we weren’t able to clear before. And stress is virtually non-existent.
We should have done this years ago.
We’ve been following the small house movement for a few years now. We are fascinated by tiny houses and all that they have to offer.
Now, we’re looking at building a tiny house and living there for part of the year (the warm months), and living and traveling in our RV the rest of the year (we love the freedom). We’ve done lot of the research – and still learning because we love everything about these houses.
We are in the process of narrowing down the location (we’ve got it down to a couple of possibilities). We’ve already got a good idea of what we want in the house that we’ll build – just not sure if we want to design it ourselves or buy a plan. But there’s no rush. We have the time to do it right…
