What’s also impressive is the comfort level and the coziness inside as well as the layout.
Tiny houses are impressive, not because of their size but in what can be built into the small space. What is remarkable is that such a small home offers the same amenities of much larger homes; on a smaller scale.
You may be thinking – how is this possible and where can you learn to build a place like this?
There are workshops offered all over North America that teach the technology and skills for building small houses. They are generally held over a weekend – two days. What is taught and the hands on aspect is mostly the same from location to location.
What you learn from each of these events is basic building principals of small houses. They may branch out into different directions depending on what the group needs and wants to know. It could lead to discussions about on or off grid building and living, the use of salvaged and/or new materials, and more.
The majority of these events teach how to build your house on wheels.
How long is a typical workshop?
Usually two days although recently there was a nine week intensive course in Vancouver, BC.
One day mixers are also available in some locations. A one day mixer is meeting and mixing with other tiny house enthusiasts. Experts are usually available to answer questions. Generally these meetings are free and are a good way to network and become familiar with the what this is all about.
The two-day workshops cover various aspects from learning the design and building components to specialized needs such as off grid systems. Although the companies generally cover the same information, some go further into detail and information than others.
One company may cover only what you need to get started, which is fine as you will learn everything you need to start. While another may go into more detail, including tips and techniques from people that have already gone through the process of building a little house to actual hands-on experience.
Then there are the ones that offer information on how to build your new home using salvaged materials.
Sometimes the events have both finished and unfinished homes on site that you can see and study from.
Most of the people that attended one of these say they are a good investment if you want to do things the right way, the first time.
When you are choosing a workshop to attend, you should find one that offers the information you most need. Take a look at the various agendas and choose one that fits your plan and your needs. All workshops are not the same so it is important to search for the one that suits you, your skill level, and what you want in your future tiny home.
